A walk through Bizkaia

Bizkaia offers us spectacular views, whether by sea, by land or by air. From Muskiz to Ondarroa, the Biscayan coast shows us an abrupt landscape making it an idyllic setting to enjoy a sunset at the end of the day. Its 28 beaches and its cliffs are of such beauty that they did not go unnoticed by the producers of Games of Thrones who did not hesitate to use them.

In the middle of this coast we find San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, between Bakio and Bermeo, which is linked to the land by a stone bridge and 231 steps. The entire area is a protected biotope. Its beauty has made it one of the most popular tourist attractions and for this reason, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia has taken some measures to regulate its visits. Anyone who plans to go to visit this enclave should visit the website www.bizkaia.eus to get the ticket to go up to the Hermitage.

Near our hostel
From our hostel you can make a lot of beautiful excursions. Below we will mention some of them that, without a doubt, must be part of your route:

Urdaibai
Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, Urdaibai is a unique space for the variety of ecosystems present, the large number of migratory birds that can be observed and its rich landscape. Here we can find spectacular beaches such as those of Laga or Laida, villages with great charm such as Elantxobe, Mundaka or Bermeo and towns with history such as Gernika, where a visit to the meeting house and the tree is essential.

The capital: Bilbao
Surrounded by green mountains, the Biscayan capital is a worldwide example of urban transformation. Among its many attractions are buildings such as the Guggenheim Museum, Azkuna Zentroa or the Euskalduna Palace; the Abandoibarra promenade along the estuary, its many bridges or the old town of Bilbao. When we visit Bilbao we cannot forget to enjoy its gastronomy and the exquisite pintxos offered by the various establishments throughout the Villa.

Bizkaia Bridge
The Bizkaia Bridge, popularly known as ‘Puente Colgante’ is a spectacular infrastructure that connects the towns of Portugalete and Getxo. It is an authentic architectural genius created by Alberto de Palacio more than 125 years ago. It is the only monument in the Basque Country included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. From its upper walkway, which can be traveled on foot, we can contemplate the impressive views of the mouth of the estuary and the mountains that surround its two banks.

Lekeitio
This fishing village makes anyone who visits it fall in love. Also, if the tide is low, we can visit the island. The walk to the Karraspio beach or to the Santa Catalina Lighthouse are highly recommended.

Natural parks
Upon entering the interior areas of the Biscayan territory, we find a beautiful mountainous landscape and deep valleys. Natural parks such as Urkiola in Duranguesado, Armañón in Encartaciones or Gorbea, shared by Álava and Bizkaia, offer numerous routes and trails for lovers of mountain sports.
